Individual Therapy for Relationship Issues, Online in New York, Massachusetts, and Florida

I offer individual therapy for relationship issues to adults located anywhere in New York, Massachusetts, and Florida. You don't need your partner, parent, or friend in the room to work on a relationship that's weighing on you. My practice is based in Albany, New York, and sessions are by secure video.

Relationships are often what people bring to therapy

Many of the people I work with come in talking about relationships: a partner they can't seem to reach, a family dynamic that keeps repeating, a friendship that's shifted, or a social circle that's hard to navigate.

You might be dealing with:

  • Communication that keeps turning into the same argument
  • Feeling misunderstood or unheard by the people closest to you
  • Family relationships that are complicated, distant, or draining
  • Friendships and social circles that feel hard to navigate
  • Patterns you notice yourself repeating from one relationship to the next
  • Stress from a relationship you can't simply walk away from

Why individual therapy, not couples counseling

Couples counseling works on a relationship with both people in the room. Individual therapy works on your side of it: how you communicate, what you need, where your limits are, and what you want to do next. It also works when the other person won't come, when the relationship is with a family member or coworker, or when you're not sure the relationship should continue. I work with individuals only, so our sessions are about you.

How we work on it together

My approach is warm, collaborative, and holistic. We'll look at the dynamics you're caught in, what each pattern is doing for you, and what you'd like to change.

  • Emotionally focused work helps you understand the feelings and needs underneath recurring conflicts.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps you act on your values in a relationship, even when it's uncomfortable.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps you notice assumptions about what others think and check them against what's actually true.
  • Compassion-focused work helps you be kinder to yourself, which makes it easier to stay steady with others.

Feeling understood

A lot of relationship pain comes down to feeling misunderstood. In our sessions, the first goal is simple: that you feel heard. From there, we can work on helping the people in your life understand you better, too. If relationship stress comes with people-pleasing or trouble setting limits, see codependency therapy.

Questions about therapy for relationship issues

What type of therapist should I see for relationship issues?

If you're working on a relationship on your own, look for a licensed therapist who sees individuals and is comfortable with relationship dynamics and communication. If you and a partner both want to work on it together, a couples counselor is the better fit.

Can I go to therapy for relationship problems without my partner?

Yes. Individual therapy focuses on your side of the relationship: what you feel, what you need, and how you want to respond. Changes on one side can shift the whole dynamic.

Do you work on family and friendship issues, not just romantic relationships?

Yes. Relationships with parents, adult children, siblings, friends, and coworkers can be just as complicated, and they're all welcome in our work.
