Spirituality in Therapy, Online in New York, Massachusetts, and Florida

I offer online therapy to adults located anywhere in New York, Massachusetts, and Florida in which spirituality is welcome as part of the work if it matters to you, in any tradition or none. I'm a licensed clinical social worker based in Albany, New York.

Your spiritual life is welcome here

For some people, faith or spirituality is part of how they get through hard seasons, make decisions, and find steadiness. Others are still working out what they believe, or have a complicated relationship with religion. All of that is welcome.

You decide how much of it comes into our sessions — a little, a lot, or none at all. I don't impose any belief system; I respect yours as part of who you are.

Any tradition, or none

You might practice within a religious tradition, follow a more personal spiritual path, or simply care about meaning and purpose without a name for it. You might be questioning beliefs you grew up with. Whatever your starting point, you won't need to defend it or explain it away. A culturally sensitive approach means your background, community, and beliefs shape the work instead of being set aside.

How spirituality and evidence-based therapy fit together

This is still therapy. I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and I use the same evidence-based approaches with every client, adapted to fit you. When spirituality matters to you, it becomes part of how we apply them:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on living by your values. For many people, those values are tied to what they believe, which gives this work real depth.
  • Compassion-focused work helps you offer yourself the same kindness you'd offer someone you love.
  • Mindfulness-based skills can sit alongside meditation, prayer, or other practices you already use to quiet your mind.

When people bring spirituality into therapy

People often want their spiritual life to have a place in therapy when:

  • Anxiety and stress have built up, and they want to draw on what already grounds them
  • A life transition has raised questions about meaning, purpose, or what comes next
  • They feel disconnected from a practice or community that used to steady them
  • Their beliefs are changing, and they want room to sort through that without judgment
  • They're going through a period of spiritual searching and want a grounded place to talk about it
  • They're highly sensitive and drawn to a spiritual path

What this is not

It isn't pastoral counseling, spiritual direction, or religious instruction, and I won't tell you what to believe. It's licensed clinical therapy in which your spiritual life is respected as part of who you are.

Questions about spirituality in therapy

Do I have to be religious or spiritual to work with you?

No. Faith or spirituality is welcome in our work when it matters to you, and it never has to be part of it. The same tools help whether or not it's part of your life.

What if I'm questioning my faith, or I've stepped away from it?

That's welcome too. Therapy can be a place to sort through changing beliefs at your own pace, without pressure in any direction.

What's the difference between a therapist and a spiritual counselor?

A spiritual counselor or healer may not hold a clinical license. I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York, Massachusetts, and Florida, so our work is licensed clinical therapy, with your spiritual life welcome as part of it.

Can I use my insurance for this kind of therapy?

Yes. Sessions are billed like any other therapy session. I'm in-network with CDPHP, Highmark Blue Shield of Northeastern New York, and MVP Health Care, and I can provide a Superbill for out-of-network plans.
